Karl originated the role of Charlie in the World Premiere of Scott McPherson's Marvin's Room at The Goodman Theatre and in the subsequent productions at The Hartford Stage Company, Playwrights Horizons in NYC, and a commercial off-Broadway run at The Minetta Lane Theatre in New York City. 

Karl also originated the role of Solly in the World Premiere of Comedy Legend Shelley Berman's First is Supper at The National Jewish Theatre 

Karl appeared as Bush in the American Premiere of RANK directed by Tony Award Nominee and Laurence Olivier Award Winner Wilson Milam, at LA's Odyssey Theatre.

Karl appeared opposite Ellen Greene, as David in the West Coast premier of Bob Randall's David's Mother at The Pasadena Playhouse and subsequent productions in San Diego and Santa Barbara.  He received a Young Artist Award for his performance.

Karl began his career in theatre while in 9th grade, appearing with Judith Barcroft, Tom Bower, and Edgar Meyer in the Midwest Premiere of Marsha Norman’s Traveler in the Dark at Chicago’s Wisdom Bridge Theatre.  The production was directed by assistant to Sanford Meisner, and UCLA Theatre professor, the late Edward Ka
